Dental Bonding

Dentist and assistant performing a dental bonding procedure on a patientDental bonding involves applying a tooth-colored composite resin to the surface of a tooth to repair damage or improve its appearance. The resin material is shaped and molded to match the natural contours of the tooth, then hardened and polished to blend seamlessly with the surrounding teeth. Bonding is an excellent option for small cosmetic and structural imperfections, offering a natural look with minimal tooth alteration.

What Is Dental Bonding Used For?

Dental bonding is used for a variety of cosmetic and restorative purposes, including:
•  Repairing chipped or cracked teeth: Bonding can fix minor chips or cracks by restoring the tooth's natural shape and protecting it from further damage.
•  Closing gaps between teeth: For patients with small gaps between teeth, bonding is used to fill the spaces and create a more uniform appearance.
•  Improving tooth color: Bonding can cover discoloration or staining that doesn't respond to traditional whitening treatments.
•  Lengthening or reshaping teeth: If a tooth is shorter than the others or has an uneven shape, bonding is used to improve symmetry and proportion.
•  Protecting exposed tooth roots: For patients with receding gums, bonding is often applied to protect the sensitive roots of the teeth.

How Is the Dental Bonding Procedure Done?

The dental bonding procedure is relatively simple and is usually completed in one visit, often in less than one hour per tooth. Here's how it works:
•  Preparation: We will select a shade of composite resin that closely matches the natural color of your teeth. In most cases, no anesthesia is needed unless the bonding is used to fill a decayed tooth or repair a chip near the nerve.
•  Tooth conditioning: The surface of the tooth is slightly roughened, and a conditioning liquid is applied to help the bonding material adhere to the tooth.
•  Application of bonding material: The composite resin is applied to the tooth in layers. The dentist shapes and molds the material to create the desired appearance. A special light or laser is then used to harden each layer of the resin.
•  Shaping and polishing: Once the resin is hardened, we will trim, shape, and polish the bonding to match the surrounding teeth and achieve a smooth, natural look.

Recovery After Dental Bonding

Recovery from dental bonding is quick, as the procedure is non-invasive and requires no downtime. Patients can resume their regular activities immediately after leaving the dental office. You may feel some mild sensitivity to hot or cold foods for a few days, but this usually subsides on its own. It's important to follow our instructions for post-procedure care, which may include avoiding hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours.

How Long Does Dental Bonding Last?

Dental bonding is a durable solution, but it is not as strong as natural teeth or other restorative options like crowns or veneers. With proper care, bonding can last between three to 10 years. Maintaining dental bonding generally requires the same care as natural teeth.

The lifespan of the bonding depends on factors such as the location of the bonded tooth, the patient's oral habits, and the material used. For example, bonding on the front teeth may not last as long as on back teeth, which endure more wear from chewing.
