Dental Filling
Dental fillings are a common dental treatment used to restore teeth damaged by cavities or decay. The process involves removing the decayed portion of the tooth and filling the space with a material designed to restore the tooth's structure and function. Common filling materials include composite resin (tooth-colored), amalgam (silver), gold, and porcelain. The choice of material depends on factors such as the location of the cavity, patient preference, and the size of the decay.
What Are Fillings Used For?
Fillings are primarily used to treat cavities, which occur when tooth enamel is eroded by acids produced by bacteria in plaque. Left untreated, cavities can lead to tooth pain, infection, and even tooth loss. Fillings are also used to repair teeth that are chipped, cracked, or worn down due to grinding (bruxism) or other factors. By filling the damaged areas, the tooth is strengthened, preventing further decay or structural damage.
How Is the Filling Procedure Done?
The process of getting a dental filling is straightforward and usually completed in a single appointment. Here's how the procedure works:
• |
Examination and diagnosis: Lakeview Dental Center will examine your tooth, often using X-rays, to assess the extent of the decay or damage.
|
• |
Anesthesia: Before beginning the procedure, we will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area around the affected tooth, ensuring comfort during the process.
|
• |
Removing decay: We will remove the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth using a dental drill, laser, or air abrasion tool. This prepares the tooth for the filling material.
|
• |
Filling the cavity: Once the decay is removed, we will clean the cavity to remove any debris or bacteria. The chosen filling material is then applied in layers and hardened using a special light (in the case of composite resin fillings). We will shape the filling to match the natural contours of the tooth.
|
• |
Polishing and adjustments: After the filling is placed, we will polish the tooth and make necessary adjustments to ensure the filling fits comfortably and does not interfere with your bite. |
How to Maintain Fillings
Proper oral hygiene and regular dental checkups are essential to maintain the integrity of your fillings and overall oral health. Here are some key maintenance tips:
• |
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste to prevent plaque buildup.
|
• |
Floss daily to clean between teeth and prevent decay around the edges of fillings.
|
• |
Avoid hard or sticky foods that can dislodge or damage fillings.
|
• |
Visit our office regularly for checkups and cleanings. We will monitor the condition of your fillings and recommend replacements if necessary.
|
• |
If you grind your teeth, we may recommend a night guard to protect your fillings from excessive wear. |
