Dentures

Dentures are removable dental appliances used to replace missing teeth and restore both functionality and aesthetics to the mouth.

•  Complete dentures are used when all teeth in the upper or lower jaw are missing. They consist of a full set of artificial teeth attached to a gum-colored acrylic base that sits directly on the gums.
•  Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. Partial dentures consist of replacement teeth attached to a metal or acrylic framework, which clips onto the existing teeth to stay in place.

Both types of dentures help restore the ability to chew, speak, and smile confidently, while also preventing the facial muscles from sagging due to missing teeth.

How Is the Denture Procedure Done?

The process of getting dentures involves several steps:
•  Initial consultation: Our doctors will assess your oral health, including your gum tissue and any remaining teeth, to determine if complete or partial dentures are appropriate. If necessary, teeth may need extraction before the denture process begins.
•  Impressions and measurements: Once the mouth is ready, we will take impressions of the gums and any remaining teeth to create a model for the dentures. Measurements are also taken to ensure the dentures fit correctly and provide proper bite alignment.
•  Trial fittings: Before the final dentures are made, we may fit a trial set of dentures to check for comfort and appearance. We can make adjustments to ensure the best fit.
•  Final dentures: After the trial fittings, the final dentures are created and fitted. We may make final adjustments during the fitting to ensure the dentures are secure and comfortable.

Adjusting to Dentures

After receiving dentures, it can take some time to adjust. During the first few days, patients may experience mild discomfort or soreness in the gums, and it may take a little time to get used to speaking and chewing with the dentures. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage any discomfort during the adjustment period.

Soft foods are recommended at first, and as the mouth adjusts, patients can gradually return to a more normal diet. We will also provide instructions for caring for sore spots that may develop during the initial period.

How Long Do Dentures Last?

With proper care, dentures can last five to 10 years. However, over time, changes in the mouth's shape caused by bone resorption and tissue changes may require adjustments or replacements. We may also need to reline or rebase the dentures to improve their fit.

How to Maintain Dentures

Proper care and maintenance of dentures are essential to ensure their longevity and effectiveness:
•  Clean dentures daily: You should brush your dentures daily to remove food particles, plaque, and stains. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and non-abrasive denture cleaner to prevent scratches.
•  Soak dentures overnight: When not wearing them, place your dentures in water or a denture-soaking solution to keep them from drying out and warping.
•  Rinse after meals: After eating, rinse your dentures with water to remove any food debris.
•  Care for gums: Clean your gums and any remaining teeth with a soft toothbrush or gauze to keep the mouth healthy.
•  Handle with care: Dentures can break if dropped, so it's important to handle them carefully.
