Inlays & Onlays

Joyful white woman showing off her beautiful teeth with a smile.Inlays and onlays are restorations that are bonded to the surface of a damaged tooth. Often referred to as indirect fillings, both are made from materials like porcelain, composite resin, or gold and are custom-fitted to the tooth. The main difference between the two lies in the area of the tooth they cover.

Inlays are used to repair damage or decay inside the tooth's cusps (the rounded edges of the chewing surface). Inlays fit neatly within the grooves of the tooth, preserving more of the natural tooth structure.

Onlays cover a larger area and are used when the damage extends to one or more cusps of the tooth. They are sometimes called partial crowns because they cover a significant portion of the tooth's surface.

What Are Inlays and Onlays Used For?

Inlays and onlays are used to restore teeth that are too damaged for a standard filling but do not require a full crown. They are often chosen when:
•  A tooth has moderate decay that does not extend beyond the cusps
•  A filling is not sufficient due to the extent of the damage
•  There is a desire to preserve as much of the natural tooth structure as possible
•  The tooth has fractured or is weakened by wear and tear but is still salvageable without a crown

Inlays and onlays are ideal for people seeking a long-lasting and more conservative approach to restoring their teeth, especially for molars and premolars that endure significant chewing forces.

How Is the Inlay and Onlay Procedure Done?

The inlay and onlay procedure is a minimally invasive dental treatment designed to restore teeth that are damaged by decay or wear. Using the Glidewell IO scanner and milling system, we are able to provide patients with precise, high-quality restorations in a single visit. Saving you time and ensuring a quick, effective restoration.

Recovery after getting an inlay or onlay is typically minimal. Patients can return to normal activities almost immediately after the procedure. It's common to experience some mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure in the days following the treatment, but this usually subsides as the tooth adjusts to the restoration.

How Long Do Inlays and Onlays Last?

Inlays and onlays are durable and long-lasting restorations. With proper care, they can last 10 to 30 years or even longer, depending on the material used and the patient's oral hygiene habits. Porcelain and gold are generally the most durable, while composite resin may wear down more quickly.

Regular dental checkups are important to monitor the condition of the inlay or onlay and ensure that it remains intact and functional. Maintaining inlays and onlays is straightforward and similar to caring for natural teeth.
